TheRomanCatholicChurchhaslongdominatedthespiritualandpoliticallifeofParaguay.Althoughitadmirablyopposescorruptionandimmorality,thereisalsomuchsuperstitioustraditionalism,strongdevotiontoMaryandoccult-relatedbondagetomanypre-Christiandeitiesandcustoms.ThesepracticeskeepmillionsfromlibertyintheLordJesusandmustbebrokenbyprayer.TheChurchoftenactivelyopposestheworkofevangelicals.Paraguayhasneverhadatruespiritualawakening,andfewoftheCatholicSpanish-GuaranímajorityhavealivingrelationshipwithChrist.
